A Unique Mentee

No wonder they say, "Mentoring is a two-way street: the mentor gets wiser while mentoring, and the mentee gains knowledge through their mentor."

At Metis Hive, we regularly connect with Life Science students through our interactive group sessions and 1-on-1 calls. Today our mentors had a unique student. He may not be unique in general, but he presented a unique case among the students we have mentored so far. He has completed his basic science degree (chemistry, botany, zoology) and is currently pursuing M.Sc. in Zoology. He has cerebral palsy (right hemiplegia). He also has epilepsy, because of which he has been advised against travelling alone and staying alone. He has many limitations, physically and socially. As a result of these, there are certain mental limitations that he has created for himself. He told us that he has the willpower and determination, we have decided to support him in his journey.

We started by giving him the assignment to read "GRIT: The Power of Passion and Perseverance" by Angela Duckworth, as he said he loves reading. And we have asked him to write a summary of everything that he learns from the book. This is essential to give him confidence in communication and enhance his typing skills, eventually opening up avenues at work.

This is truly the #JoyofMentoring. He was happy at the end of the session, and we felt accomplished in our little way. We look forward to his assignment now.

We respect his #Attitude despite the challenges he has in life.

It fills us with #Gratitude to be in a position where we can make a little difference in others' lives.
