The Realisations from the First Metis Hive Interactive Session

Now that we know it is our lack of knowledge, we are unaware of the job opportunities in Life Sciences (https://www.metishive.com/post/the-truth-about-job-opportunities-in-life-sciences), it is time to look into some prospective career streams for life sciences students from various domains.

So, we decided to delve into various career opportunities for our first virtual interactive session with the life sciences students. We realised that a vast majority of students were only aware of the traditional path of establishing their career in this stream: PhD- Postdoc-Faculty! Then the Metis Hive team displayed the image below that gives you an idea of how many options are available other than academia to have a successful career in life science. Further discussion into the topic left the students spellbound and opened new avenues to reflect on their choices and future career paths.

The comments below received from the participants after the session explicitly showcase the extent of lack of exposure to the existing opportunities in the life sciences sector that attendees were living in before being introduced to a plethora of career opportunities.

"I appreciate it so much that someone out there had this idea of giving honest and realistic career guidance to the youth of life sciences. The session was so informative and fun that I couldn't keep track of time! I'm glad I was a part of it, and I look forward to more such sessions."

"The session was very informative since such topics are not keenly explored about in college, at least in my college, we only get discouraged that life science has fewer opportunities by our seniors, but today's session has opened the plethora of fields I could work and direct my interest towards the work which could grip me. I would like to attend all the upcoming sessions as well. Thank You for this wonderful session !!"

"It was really good. I've been looking for some guidance regarding internships, projects, and career paths after my bachelor in general, and today attending this session clearly solved many of those queries, if not all. Excited to see what more sessions you have planned. :)"

"It was an interesting interaction, coming to know a lot about the Mentors and also my co-attendees. My prime takeaway with this session is that the Job we wanna pursue is all about exploring by ourselves, What's right and how networking and planning a roadmap can help in this!"

Why is it that when these opportunities exist, the life sciences students community feel that there are no career options for them? There could be a few reasons for it:

1. A preconditioned mind, only trained to foresee the career path to becoming a faculty as the best option available.

2. Lack of curiosity to explore various career options in life sciences

3. You may be aware of a number of these options, if not all, but have no idea how to apply for these jobs. The lack of guidance makes these options seem unapproachable.

Metis Hive is dedicated to addressing all the above problems prevailing in the community. We are here to help you guide through the complete framework to allow you to have a successful career. Don't forget to check our next blog for the "8 steps to a fulfilling career in science".
